Between Then and Now

As always happens, life gets in the way. Sewing now became utilitarian – curtains, bedding, cushions etc.

As a Cancerian, material was always “hoarded” so when the patchwork interest resurfaced at the start of the new millennium, there was a basis with which to work.

The start was gradual beginning with cushions as gifts.

Then came a large patchwork bed cover incorporating

leftover fabric from the original Log Cabin jacket.

Next came gifts of patchworks throws personalised with embroidered baby names.

Then, without warning,

the first granddaughter

arrived and to welcome

her, more embroidered

patchwork.

And her first

Christmas stocking just had to be patchwork.

Now

The plastic crate from B&Q or Homebase was now too small for all the fabric.

Cottons from USA, Wales, Scotland, and England and from local suppliers were sorted into colour groups.

Embroidered names were replaced by numbers and the alphabet.

These quilt tops or patchwork throws are suitable as cloths for tables, wall hangings, playmats or just plain throws. They are not quilted and not bulky.

When time permits, plain patchwork with no embroidery also appears as do cushions, both plain and embroidered.

In the beginning...

In the late 1970s I attended classes in Log Cabin patchwork,

the only formal training. The result was a reversible jacket.
